Øfdream releases wave masterpiece - Anthology Pt.1

  • Anthology pt.1 is the upcoming EP from French producer Øfdream which has just been released via The Playground Records. Amassing over 3 million plays already for his tracks, Anthology pt.1 shows off Øfdream's forward thinking production skills, placing him as one of the leaders and pioneers in the groundbreaking new WAVE scene. Øfdream has also gone on to sharing stages with the likes of Vitalic, Com Truise and Lorn at Electric Brixton recently.

Drawing inspiration from artists such as Nothing Here, Klimeks, Lorn, The Prodigy, Massive Attack and Mssingno, Øfdream’s forays into production began with early experiments in progressive house. Dabbling in hip-hop and creating new sounds and textures, his sound began to take shape akin to garage, dark-melodious trap and heavy alternative electronic inspired music by which he was influenced. The result is a remarkable body of work with groundbreaking, immersive tracks such as ‘Thelema’ and ‘Fallen Angel’, which paint a vibrant picture of glacial landscapes amidst gleaming, shimmering desert sands. Øfdream channels these fantasies into a spellbinding actuality of vivid and lush textures by creating deep, provocative atmospheres and hooks.

Øfdream comments: “I am really happy with the release of “Anthology”. I worked hard on the different atmospheres and space of this EP, and hope it takes your mind on a trip.”

Øfdream will be a guest at The Playground's event on  Rone, Parra For Cuva, Nhoah, Sex Of Insects and CHVRN at the Steelyard on November 11th. Tickets here.

EP Tracklist:
1: Thelema
2: Fallen Angel
3: First Woe
4: Ninth Gate

Collapse Under The Empire present 'The Fallen Ones' LP

Following the singles ‘Dark Water’ and ‘The Forbidden Spark‘, German duo, Collapse Under The Empire, present their signature blend of post rock and  synthwave on the latest offering ‘The Fallen Ones’ LP – due for release October 20th.

Collapse Under The Empire write emotionally charged and highly interpretive music and have drawn comparisons with legendary acts including Mogwai, God Is An Astronaut and 65daysofstatic, whilst receiving international acclaim from the likes of The 405, Q, Clash and Rocksound. Having spent the past three years largely focusing on developing other artists on their own label Finaltune Records, ‘The Fallen Ones’ marks a return to the forefront of the post-rock genre for the established duo.

It was 9 years ago that Chris Burda and Martin Grimm began making music together and to date the pair have amassed a catalogue of 5 full-length albums. Despite rapidly establishing themselves as an accomplished studio group, they were yet to perform live until the highly coveted DUNK!Festival in Belgium invited them to join the bill in 2016, alongside Russian Circles, Pelican and Nordic Giants. ‘The Fallen Ones’ will be the first record to be toured live in a decade and marks an exciting turning point for fans across the continent.

Each track on ‘The Fallen Ones’ represents part of a journey through a disparate, pessimistic future, yet as the album progresses, the pair also strives to evoke a sense of hope, power and inner strength. The melancholic grandeur of tracks like ‘A Place Beyond’ and ‘The Forbidden Spark’ intertwine with the softer, synth-laden moments of ‘Flowers From Exile’, whilst the overall atmosphere is punctured at timely intervals by the blistering crescendos in ‘Blissful’ and the album’s masterful title-track.

Despite being entirely instrumental, their music speaks volumes. Cinematic, spacious and hauntingly darksome, this is an odyssey delving into a surreal and uncertain future. The pair have shown no signs of wavering on their sixth studio release, as they look to take their sound to the stage and march towards a new era of ambient dominance in 2017.

Listen to palence's bespoke atmospheric 'Telophase'

London-based recording artist and soundscape composer Savanh Phaophanit aka palence has released his new EP telophase on the 1st September via THE PLAYGROUND Records. Over the course of several years he has garnered a substantial online audience. A number of his tracks have been featured on popular underground music channels such as ‘The accidental poet’ and ‘FOMH’ receiving over 2.5 million Youtube views.
Inspired by post-rock and slowcore melodies, palence cites influences such as Explosions
In The Sky and Low, as well as the likes of artists such as Aphex Twin, Duster, Bluetile Lounge, drip-133 to name a few.

Using a 1971 Tandberg 4000X reel to reel player, palence has created a unique and personalised set of textures and timbres to use as tools for producing. Running his 1981 Gibson ES-335 through his reel to
reel and splicing individual notes into short stabs, he recycled the noises and drenched them with reverb to create bespoke atmospheric synth-like sounds.

The EP’s emphasis on hand-crafted sounds and reluctance to rely on any pre-recorded or sampled material is demonstrative of his desire to separate himself from a rapidly growing scene of sample-heavy production, whilst simultaneously displaying his enthusiasm for original and pioneering methods of creating music.

Astari Nite share 'Divination' from 'Dreams Of Majesty' EP

After two independently released studio albums - which include Astari Nite (2010) and Requiem Mass - Astari Nite signed to the German Danse Macabre Records to release Stereo Waltz (2014), Anonymous (2015) and Until The End Of The Moon (2016).

More recently, they have shared the third single 'Divination' from their latest album Dreams Of Majesty.

The EP opens with 'Lovesick,' a very energetic track that features old school guitars, a sharp bass, fast drums, and modern synths. 'The Girl Who Tried,' that was the second single of the release, is an instant flashback in time to the late 80’s, early 90’s dark and goth clubs of London and New York. A mysterious synth sets the atmosphere for 'Divination,' a new-wave balad with deep vocals and post-punk guitars. And last but not least is 'The Witching Hour,' a song reminiscent of The Cure’s Disintegration years but with a modern twist.

Zola Jesus releases video for new track 'Exhumed'

Zola Jesus has paid homage to her longstanding relationship with Sacred Bones Records by announcing that her next record, Okavi, will be released through the label on September 8th.

Having released three EPs and five full-length albums, Nika Roza Danilova, aka Zola Jesus,  has been recording music for more than a decade. Her musical style has been associated with a wide variety of artists including Ian Curtis, Lydia Lunch, Diamanda Galás, Throbbing Gristle, Swans, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Lisa Gerrard  (Dead Can Dance) and Elizabeth Frazer (Cocteau Twins.) However, Zola Jesus has the innate ability to echo these artists while still maintaining her own idiosyncratic style.

The album is a deeply personal offering, written at a time of great conflict and personal tragedy in the artist’s life. Thus, it embodies a dark and experimental atmosphere, both cathartic and exploratory. The contributions of Danilova’s longtime live bandmate Alex DeGroot, producer/musician WIFE, cellist/noise-maker Shannon Kennedy from Pedestrian Deposit, and percussionist Ted Byrnes all aided in creating the textured soundscape of the album.

Speaking of the album she says: Okovi is a Slavic word for shackles. We’re all shackled to something—to life, to death, to bodies, to minds, to illness, to people, to birthright, to duty. Each of us born with a unique debt, and we have until we die to pay it back.  Without this cost, what gives us the right to live? And moreover, what gives us the right to die? Are we really even free to choose?

This album is a deeply personal snapshot of loss, reconciliation, and a sympathy for the chains that keep us all grounded to the unforgiving laws of nature. To bring it to life, I decided to enlist the help of Alex DeGroot, who has been the only constant in my live band and helped mix the Stridulum EP back in 2010. It will be released on Sacred Bones, the closest group of people I’ll ever have to blood-bound family.

CHVRN shares 'Secrets' from upcoming EP

CHVRN is an electronic producer hailing from Russia. Deriving his name from Charn, the city in C. S Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia, his musical endeavours have lead him on a path of discovery to Russia’s witch house scene.

An interesting movement with roots based in occult-themed dark electronica, witch house uses hip-hop drum machines, noise atmospherics, creepy samples, dark synthpop-influenced dense reverb, and heavily altered, distorted, and pitched down vocals to characterize the genre's sound. Visual elements include triangles, crosses and Unicode symbols used in artist names, and macabre aesthetics such as those from horror films.

CHVRN became interested in music when he acquired his first guitar ten years ago. In 2011 he started the 8bit/chiptune project “Reboot Me” and has since garnered over 6 million Youtube views, shared stages with the likes of Dita Redrum, Gnothi Seauton. He has shared the stage with the likes of  IC3PEAK and has collaborated with Polish wave producer MYSTXRIVL. His remixes include tracks for a string of USA, artists including Aesthetic Perfection and GenCAB.

His next conquest is Drowned, a six track EP which is set to drop on August 4th via Playground Records. Described as “a strong atmospheric sound, combined with spatterings of modern hip-hop and EDM rhythms” the EP  is inspired by a variety of genres: modern wave, post rock and witch house.

'Mother' is the latest single from MissinCat's Forces EP

Italian-born songstress MissinCat has shared ‘Mother,’ the latest single from her upcoming album Forces.

‘Mother’ is a collaboration with La Boum Fatale. The feisty five track EP features collaborations with five different artists: Hundreds, Me & My Drummer, Robot Koch, La Boum Fatale and Federico Albanese. The track has been described as “a sound that buries itself deep below the skin. The breadth of her musical tastes, as well as her idiosyncratic vocal abilities, are redolent of Bjork, yet completely untethered to the shackles of any single genre.”

Born in Milan but having lived in Berlin since she started her solo career, Caterina Barbier aka MissinCat has been writing and producing music for film scores: with Producer Martin Todsahrow she worked on the film score of Sönke Wortmann´s movie Schossgebete (2014) and on the Italian-German production Omamamia (2012) . She recently wrote and produced the music score for Italian short Film “Fragole” (2017), which is currently being screened at festivals. MissinCat’s two previous albums WOW (2011) and Wirewalker (2015) were well received by critics and fans alike, with her first single ‘Back On My Feet’ becoming a radio hit on Bayern 3, SWR 3, 1Live, Radioeins, Fritz, Sputnik, and reached #8 on Capusstations. The track was also chosen by Nintendo for its 2009 German television campaign.

Speaking of her early beginnings as a musician, MissinCat says: “Music was my passion, I loved singing and I began early writing music. I still remember my first trials of music production with 2 cassette tapes on my ghetto-blaster.”

'Touch The Sky' // Pressyes's Dreamy New Single

The video for Pressyes's ‘Touch The Sky’ recently premiered through Dork Magazine and is a beautifully dreamy piece of film, perfectly suited to the sparkly, psychedelic tune.

After touring with a few well known Austrian bands, and collecting countless memories on his travels backpacking through Asia and Europe,  René Mühlberger took a hiatus to focus on his new project, Pressyes.

Hidden away from the public’s eyes and ears, sheltered in his studio behind a stash of analog synthesisers and equipment, Mühlberger brought his tunes to life. The result is a sublime soundscape embodied with a reminiscence of the big pop days of the 70’s, while scattered with lush textures and psychedelia.

INTERVIEW // We Catch Up With ... VŌS

VŌS comprises of R’n’B entranced singer, Dawn Moss and Scandipop loving co-writer Palmer. Self-written and produced, the duo have brought their unlikely mix of ice and fire to a point with ‘Patience’, their first single - a proud unsigned release. The two met at a jam and fumbled through a Lianne La Havas track, a shared inspiration. One moment of reading lyrics and chords off an iPhone led to the past year, creating a collision of two sounds. Their blend of synthesis and stories of highs and lows is as familiar as the London streets that provide the song’s setting.

We chatted to them recently about their R&B Scandi Electro pop....

Hi there, how are you and what are you up to today?
Dawn: We’re great thank you. Just sat chatting about politics. Rock 'n' Roll!

To those not familiar with you, how would you describe your sound?
Robin: A marriage of R’n’B and Scandi Electro Pop.

What are the 5 albums that have influenced you the most?
Lianne La Havas - Is Your Love Big Enough
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Ben Howard - Every Kingdom
Alina Baraz - Urban Flora
James Blake - Overgrown

Which other artists are you into at the moment and why?
Dawn: Stormzy ‘cos his music rocks and he seems like a legend! Drake makes me want to get on the dance floor and Jorja smith who has an incredible voice and maturity for her age.
Robin: SOHN is forever bringing new sounds to the table, which I find super inspiring. I’m a big fan of how Sylvan Esso fuse rawness and synths and I really dig Banks for ever raising the creative bar in the world of Pop.

Are there any key pieces of equipment that you are using to define your sound?
Robin: Old analogue synths are a big part of our music, as part of our live show we’re gigging with a Moog and a Prophet. We combine these with creating and messing with samples of a mix of voices and odd percussion instruments, doing as best as we can to make a new sound.

What would you say some of the challenges artists face today in the music industry?
Robin: Old analogue synths are a big part of our music, as part of our live show we’re gigging with a Moog and a Prophet. We combine these with creating and messing with samples of a mix of voices and odd percussion instruments, doing as best as we can to make a new sound.

Where do you gather songwriting inspiration?
Dawn: Generally from anything around me, whether it be something I’m reading in the news or personal experience.

Take us through your songwriting process. Are there any particular steps you take when putting your music together?
Robin: It changes from track to track - we’ve ranged from challenging ourselves to starting a brand new track every 30 minutes to one of us coming with a jam or with the skeleton of a song. More often than not we sit down and try a tonne of ideas out together and see where that gets us, but ultimately beyond a point the story of the song takes over the creative process.

What’s the best gig you have ever done and why?
Robin: Our first ever gig at the Alley Cat was awesome, so much energy from the audience.

And the worst?
Dawn: I’m sure that’s yet to come…

If you weren't a musician what would you be?
Dawn: I always wanted to be in MI5, but I probably shouldn’t tell you that.
Robin: I’m in MI5.

Do you have any particular gigs or festivals that you dream about playing?
Dawn: Glasto
Robin: I’m trying to get her in so we can play my mates stage, can anyone help…?!

If you could perform alongside any other band or artist, living or dead, who would it be?
Dawn: Depends if you’re talking classic or new. New for me would be Stormzy or Drake. Old would be Michael Jackson or Spice Girls. Haha!
Robin: Bon Iver’s latest live show setup blew me away, raw acoustic instruments with live electronics. Yes please.

Do you have any information regarding upcoming releases, projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
We’re currently planning a live session at Abbey Road, which will be a big tick on the bucket list for both of us! And coming up on the 13th June we’re playing upstairs at Ronnie Scott’s!

Hiroshi Watanabe Remixes Sex Of Insects' 'I'm Full'

Sex Of Insects  have just shared their summer anthem, “I’m Full (Hiroshi Watanabe Remix)” via Ylotana Music.

Formed in May 2016 by guitarist, Anatoly Ylotana (Ylotana Project) and including Alexandra Bartashevich (Vocals) and Roman Korablove (Rhythm), Sex Of Insects career highlights include playing at the Gazgolder Club (Moscow), working with Sid le Rock, Luke vB & Hiroshi Watanabe.

After meeting Alexandra Bartashevich, Anatoly knew that the project had found itself a new image thanks to her talented and original performance. Anatoly met with Roman Korablove shortly after the disappearance of their original Rhythm producer and has since been helping guide the band into a completely new sound. At its core lies a complete improvisation of guitar sounds and vocals mixed with some vibrant electronic grooves. Guaranteed uniqueness with an almost complete absence of synthesisers. Anatoly lists their influences as Frank Zappa, Led Zeppilin, Black Sabbath and more recently Underworld, Daft Punk and Danny Tinaglia.

Japanese producer, Hiroshi Watanabe aka KAITO's take on the original, uses the vocal flairs from Alexandra Bartashevich throughout his remix to embellish the use the old school Acid House leads and beautiful string sections. Groove-laced, progressive elements continuously move and entangle throughout to keep the listener waiting for more.

Frythm + AVNDR To Release New Single

You would never think that Matthew Pena aka Frythm hated the piano lessons as a child. However, years after the El Paso-based artist threw in the towel, his love for music was rekindled by an encounter with a MIDI keyboard and a DAW. A new, self-motivated approach was born, and he started producing a unique blend of ambient electronic and warped hypnotizing beats at the age of 17. He began gaining credit as a live performer thereafter, presenting his live instrumental shows on electric guitar, keyboard and live drumming. In early 2016, he joined the Los Angeles-based collective SoulfulxNature, who released the tracks “Too Much” and “Your Love”.

Following his latest release “Breakthrough ft. Rome Fortune” which has received support from the likes of COMPLEX and Earmilk, Texas-based producer and musician Frythm is ready for round two with new single “There For You ft. AVNDR” which is set to be released on the 14th July via SoulfulxNature.

The song captures a feeling of nostalgia and shows off Frythm's ambient side with a soothing tone which summons a floating, comatose feeling.

Of the collaboration with AVNDR, Frythm says,I remember looking through SoundCloud one and stumbling across AVNDR, the name looked catchy so I decided to listen to his music and I was in awe. Before the collaboration even started I was a fan of his music which made this track that much more special. We've had There For You for close to 7 months now and decided that this was finally the perfect time to show the world.”
